Thus far, the recorded output of Winston-Salem’s Primovanhalen is small, but far from slight. In November, the trio of guitarist Adam Kelly, bassist Danny Tokyo and drummer Anthony Petrovic (also of Winston Facials and Hopscotch alums Burglar Fucker) introduced themselves with a seven-minute psych-sludge slog titled, simply, “1.” Though it’s framed mostly within one lumbering doom riff, the guitar’s spacey noise-rock detour and a sprint to the coda break the lull enough to highlight the band’s hypnotic effect. April’s follow-up, “Type II Diabetes” is the 10-and-a-half-minute closer to a compilation issued by Winston-Salem record store and beer bar Reanimator. Here, the band finds a more dynamic sweet spot, shifting between grandiose Hawkwind space-rock and frenetic Lightning Bolt fury. Certainly, the still-young Primovanhalen has shown a knack for quality over quantity, but it’s that trait which makes them such a promising new band.
